What are the Vento bands?

The  “Vento bands” describe the bands of compensation available for injury to feelings in discrimination cases as set out in the case of Vento v The Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police [2002] EWCA Civ 1871.

Since the case, there have been various updates to the compensation awards which encompass three separate bands. The upper band covers the most serious cases where there has been an extensive campaign of discriminatory treatment. The middle band applies to those cases which do not merit an award within the highest band. Finally, the lower band award will cover those less serious cases where the act of discrimination is an isolated or one-off occurrence.
